Folding Pods by Hariri & Hariri Architecture: 2019 Best of Year Winner for On The Boards: Residential

Sisters Gisue and Mojgan Hariri of Hariri & Hariri Architecture, both Interior Design Hall of Fame members, conceived a lightweight, collapsible shelter that fits on a flatbed truck for easy transport to any desired location. Inspired by origami, the unit measures 500 square feet, with hinged exterior panels of glass and thin, 3-D fiber cement that play with light and shadow. The architects designed the pod as a disaster-relief shelter, but the concept is also suitable for use as a beach cabana or when assembled in clusters, facilities for large events. “Units could be prefabricated at a basic cost,” Gisue Hariri explains, “and a percentage of sales used to donate pods to refugees.”
